About Ronda Rousey

Ronda was born in 1987 to AnnMaria De Mars and Ron Rousey. Her mother was a well-known judoka (a practitioner of judo, a fighting discipline). She had a troubled childhood due to apraxia, a speech disorder caused to her at birth. At 11 years of age, her mother started training Ronda in judo. Six years after she qualified for the Athens Olympics, but lost in her first match.

Over the next couple of years, she kept competing in judo and achieved decent results. Among other achievements, she managed to become the first American judoka to win two Junior World medals. At the Beijing Olympics of 2008, she won her first Olympic medal, a bronze. She decided to quit judo and focus on mixed martial arts when she was 21. Her amateur debut took place in August of 2010, and it took her only 23 seconds to submit Hayden Munoz. Lots of her victories from his period are similar to her win over Munoz, especially their unusually short duration.

In 2011, she debuted at Strikeforce and defeated Sarah D’Alelio, again early in the first round. She won the Strikeforce title a year later, defeating Miesha Tate by decorating her elbow via submission maneuver. She later defended her title vs Sarah Kaufman, submitting her 54 seconds into the fight.

Later that year, she signed for the UFC, immediately becoming the first UFC Women’s Bantamweight champ, due to being the first female UFC fighter. She fought Liz Carmouche and Tate once more, to defend her belt. In early 2014, she defended the Championship against previously undefeated Sara McMann and managed to win by TKO. This marked her first career victory, not by armbar! How insane is that? She later defended her title against Alexis Davis, defeating her via KO in 16 seconds, Cat Zingano (armbar, 14 seconds) and Bethe Correira (KO, 34 seconds).

During this time, she also started to make appearances in WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). She appeared at 2014’s SummerSlam and then at the next year’s WrestleMania.

End of UFC Career

During her first 6 UFC matches, she spent a total of 1077 seconds in the ring, earning $1,080,000. So technically she made just above $1000 per second fighting.

Her reign came to an end when she fought Holly Holm in November of 2015. Although she was the favorite to win the fight, she was knocked out in the second round. This marked both her first loss and the end of her three-year Championship reign. After the fight, she was medically suspended and cleared a month later.

She returned to UFC a year later to face Amanda Nunes, and ironically, lost the fight early in the first round. This marked the end of her UFC career, and she seemed to disappear from the eye of the public afterward.

Rousey made an appearance at WWE’s Royal Rumble in January, and it was revealed that Rousey signed for WWE on a full-time contract. At the next month’s PPV, the Elimination Chamber, Ronda’s storyline began, after she got into a feud with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon (“The Authority”).

Finally, earlier this month, WWE announced that Rousey’s wrestling debut will happen at the biggest wrestling event of the year, Wrestlemania. She will appear alongside Kurt Angle, in a mixed tag match against The Authority. WrestleMania will take place in just a week, on April 8th, if you’re interested in seeing Rousey’s in-ring debut. We wonder what will be her finishing move, maybe the armbar?

How did Ronda Rousey make her money and wealth?

Ronda Rousey was born in February of 1987 in Riverside, California. Her childhood was a little bumpy, with a few events occurring that would prove to be very formative for a young Rousey. As a child, she struggled with some health issues, including apraxia, which caused her to have issues with speech. Apparently, she had apraxia due to the fact that she was born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. In order to help her cope with this, her parents moved to North Dakota so that she could receive some of the best and most intensive speech therapy that the country had to offer. When she was still very young, her father broke her back in a sledding accident and learned from his doctors that, although he would survive the injury, he would be a paraplegic for the rest of his life. This news caused him to commit suicide. Ronda Rousey was just eight years old when this happened.

Aside from that tragedy, it’s worth noting that Ronda grew up in a family where athletics was common. Her mother is AnnMaria De Mars, who is very well known in Judo. In 1984, AnnMaria became the first American to win a gold medal at the World Judo Championships. She competed in the -56 kg weight class. Apparently interested in following in her mother’s footsteps, Ronda began judo when she was just 11 years old. She trained with her mother for a good period of time until it became a little too dangerous. (Not for Ronda, mind you. During a practice session one day, she accidentally broke her mother’s wrist.) Ronda showed great proficiency in judo and by the time she was seventeen years old, she had effectively qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games. At such a young age, this made her the youngest judoka competing.

Although she wasn’t able to medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, it still allowed her to really show her stuff at a very high level. She began to attract a lot of attention. This just grew when, in 2004 and 2006, she medaled at the Junior Judo Championships. In 2004, she won gold, and in 2006, she won bronze. This would make her the first American athlete to win two medals at the Junior World level. Rousey would return to the Olympic stage in 2008, when she competed in Beijing. Although she lost in the quarterfinals to Edith Bosch, she was still able to take home a bronze medal in the -70 kg weight class. This was a huge deal, since this would make her the very first American to win an Olympic medal in women’s judo ever. After this win, she decided to retire from judo altogether.

While she was training in judo, Rousey often heard from others that she would probably be a very successful MMA fighter. So when she finished her career in judo, it isn’t much of a surprise that this gifted athlete decided to look into a career in MMA. She began her career as an amateur in 2010, and she started out strong by beating her first opponent Hayden Munoz in just 23 seconds. She continued to impress at an amateur level until 2011, when she made her professional debut. In said debut, she defeated Ediane Gomes in just 25 seconds. She made her Strikeforce debut in August of 2011 in a fight against Sarah D’Aleilo, which she won by verbal submission. In 2012, she defeated Miesha Tate, Strikeforce’s Women’s Bantamweight Champion. In the years to come, Ronda Rousey would become very well known for being a dominant female fighter who was extraordinarily gifted at causing quick finished. In 2014, she beat Alexis Davis in 16 seconds. In 2015, she beat Cat Zingano in 14 seconds. She was an unbeaten fighter, and a lot of people looked up to her.
