A deadly chemical leak at a silver recovery facility in West Virginia left two people dead on Wednesday and sent around 30 others to the hospital, one of whom remains in serious condition.

The incident happened at the Catalyst Refiners plant in Institute while workers were in the process of shutting down part of the operation.

According to officials, something went wrong during the process.

Emergency crews later explained that the incident involved hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that was produced when nitric acid was mixed with another substance during cleaning.

Among those injured were seven ambulance workers who responded to the scene; they were exposed while trying to help others.

Not everyone arrived at the hospital by ambulance either; ome people made their own way there in personal vehicles. At one point, someone was even transported using a garbage truck.

At least one person remains in serious condition. Hospitals were seeing people come in all day, even some who weren’t at the plant but were nearby when it happened.

A lot of them came in with breathing issues like coughing, sore throats, shortness of breath, and irritated eyes, but fortunately, most cases weren’t life-threatening.

Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as a precaution, which stayed in effect for several hours before being lifted.

Officials said the deaths were limited to individuals at the facility itself, and the odor from the gas didn’t travel far unless you were very close to the site.

Because of the exposure risk, emergency crews had to run a big decontamination process. People who may have come into contact with the chemicals also had to remove their clothing and be rinsed off.

Officals said the nearby environment doesn’t seem to have been affected by the incident; both air and water quality in the area are believed to be safe.

The company that owns the plant, Ames Goldsmith Corp., said it’s deeply saddened by what happened and plans to cooperate fully with investigators.

Federal safety officials have already launched an investigation into the incident, which could take several months to complete.

The facility itself specializes in recovering silver from industrial waste and leftover materials.

Silver shows up in everything from electronics to X-ray film and jewelry, and the process often involves using chemicals like nitric acid to separate it.

The plant sits near Institute, just outside Charleston, in an area long known for its chemical industry. While fewer plants operate there today than in the past, the region still has a strong industrial presence tied to chemical production.

The post Chemical Leak at a West Virginia Plant Leaves 2 People Dead appeared first on Gazette Review.

A woman in Louisiana is still in the hospital after a tragic shooting over the weekend in Shreveport left eight children dead. Her family says she was a devoted mom who cared deeply about her kids.

Her cousin said she was someone who was entirely devoted to her children.

The shooter was identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkin, who had a criminal record

The shooting happened across multiple locations, and the man behind it, 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, killed seven of his own children along with another child related to the family.

After the attack, Elkins carjacked someone while armed. Police later confirmed he died, though it’s still unclear exactly how.

The incident started early Sunday morning when a woman called police saying her boyfriend had shot her, taken the kids, and driven off.

The injured mother was shot in the face. Doctors decided not to remove the bullet as it’s too risky. For now, she is able to speak, but her memory is fuzzy.

According to her family, she sometimes forgets what happened and believes her children are still alive, then later remembers the truth again.

Police are still trying to figure out what led to the shooting.

Elkins had a past criminal record and had previously been convicted for illegal use of a firearm, which meant he wasn’t allowed to have guns.

Officials have since arrested another man in connection with another weapon that was used.

Elkins had allegedly also been receiving mental health treatment and had spent over a week at a local veterans’ hospital.

His cousin, whom he wasn’t very close to, described him as a quiet man who is distant at family gatherings.

While he was quiet, however, relatives said he did spend time with his children, which is why the tragedy came as a complete shock to the family.

After the initial shooting on Harrison Street, police say Elkins went to another house on West 79th Street, not far from where Christina Snow lived.

Inside the building, officers found seven children dead; another child was later discovered on the roof at the back.

Authorities said most of the children had been shot in the head, and it looked like some of them were asleep when it happened.

Neighbors struggled to understand the entire situation. One man remembered seeing the kids outside playing not long ago, and mentioned that the family had only just moved into the house six months earlier.

The post Louisiana Mother Shot in Face Still Recovering After Losing Three Children appeared first on Gazette Review.

A man armed with a machete randomly attacked three people at a busy New York City subway station on Saturday morning. The suspect was ultimately shot and killed by police, according to authorities.

Officers were called to the 42nd Street–Grand Central station around 9:40 a.m. after reports of stabbings.

When they arrived, they found the suspect acting erratically and saying he was Lucifer, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a news briefing.

Officers repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, giving the command more than 20 times, but he refused.

At one point, he moved toward them with the knife still in his hand, and an officer fired twice.

Officials said the man had already hurt several people and was still a threat, so officers tried to calm the situation first. When that didn’t work, they used force to stop him.

Police later identified the individual as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin. He had three prior arrests on record and was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

The three victims, an 84-year-old man, a 65-year-old man, and a 70-year-old woman, were injured but are expected to survive.

One of the men had serious cuts to his head and face, while the other had similar injuries along with a skull fracture.

The woman suffered a cut to her shoulder.

According to police, the suspect first attacked someone on one platform at Grand Central, then went upstairs and injured the other two on a different platform.

Transit Chief Joseph Gulotta said the stabbings appear to have been random.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul later wrote on social media that she was thankful for the officers who responded quickly. She added that the state is working with the NYPD as the investigation continues.

Earlier in the day, police told commuters to stay away from the area and expect delays.

Due to the incident, subway service was disrupted for hours, but trains eventually began stopping at the station again later in the afternoon.

One commuter, Beau Lardner, had just entered Grand Central when he heard loud bangs, which he said he could hear through his headphones. He had recently moved to Long Island but still used that station regularly and knew the layout well.

He described seeing a huge crowd suddenly rushing toward him through the turnstiles, which made him run back up the stairs.

He said he had never seen people move like that before.

The post 3 Injured In New York Subway Stabbing appeared first on Gazette Review.

A strong storm moving across Hawaii is expected to reach its peak from Thursday into Friday, bringing heavy rain, which can potentially lead to serious floods.

Some areas could see several months’ worth of rain in just a few days, so a flood watch has been issued statewide through Friday afternoon.

Aside from flooding, officials are also watching about possible landslides.

Rain totals could reach around 8 to 12 inches in some spots by Friday evening, especially in higher elevations.

While the rain has already persisted for several days, conditions are expected to get rougher on Thursday, starting with Oahu and Kauai, then spreading east overnight into Friday toward Maui and the Big Island.

Honolulu’s mayor, Rick Blangiardi, said people should be ready for evacuations as they may become necessary.

The city plans to activate its emergency operations center on Wednesday, and first responders will be sent out early to areas that are most at risk.

This system is also expected to bring gusty winds that could knock down trees and cause power outages.

Winds could reach up to 60 mph in parts of Kauai and Oahu through Thursday night, especially in central and northern areas.

This will be the third major storm to hit Hawaii since mid-March. The second one caused the worst flooding the state has seen in about 20 years, and many communities are still trying to recover.

Back in late March, Oahu saw about a foot of rain over several days, which led to severe flooding.

There were more than 200 rescues, and hundreds of homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed.

At one point, officials even ordered evacuations because they were worried the Wahiawa dam could fail due to rising water levels.

That company says it will be keeping a close eye on the dam around the clock during this storm and that it remains in good condition.

State officials have also said there are no immediate safety concerns with dams across Hawaii right now.

The rain should start to ease by Friday night into Saturday, however, forecast shows there’s a chance another round of heavier rain could show up late Sunday into early next week.

Officials have begun getting ready for the storm, clearing streams and waterways to help reduce flooding.

A Hawaii doctor accused of trying to kill his wife during a birthday hike on Oahu last year has been found guilty of attempted manslaughter.

Jurors in Honolulu County all agreed on the verdict after more than eight hours of deliberating, but they did not convict Dr. Gerhardt Konig of the more serious charge of second-degree attempted murder.

Witnesses called 911 after hearing her scream

When the decision was announced, Konig reacted quietly, lowering his head and later covering his face as he sat down, while his attorney offered support beside him.

He could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years, with sentencing scheduled for August 13.

Until then, he will remain in custody at the O’ahu Community Correctional Center.

The verdict follows a trial that lasted about three weeks, where Konig and his wife, Arielle, shared very different versions of what happened on March 24, 2025, which was her birthday.

After the trial wrapped up, his lawyer said they plan to appeal the decision.

Defense attorney Thomas Otake was relieved that the jury did not convict the man of attempted murder, saying it could have meant a life sentence.

The jury’s foreperson, Makalapua Atkins, said the group worked well together.

In the end, they agreed on the lesser charge of manslaughter because they did not believe the evidence clearly proved an intent to kill.

Prosecutor Steve Alm described the outcome as a positive result and showed appreciation for the jury, Arielle Konig, the witnesses who stepped in to help her, and the investigators involved in the case.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Joel Garner said Gerhardt Konig had become fixated on his wife’s emotional relationship with a co-worker.

He argued that this led Konig to try to push her off a cliff on the Pali Puka Trail near Honolulu.

When that didn’t work, Garner said Konig then tried to use a syringe and hit her in the head with a rock.

He added that the situation only stopped when two hikers came across them, which forced everything to end.

Otake pushed back on that version of events, saying the case really came down to two very different stories without clear proof.

When he testified, Gerhardt Konig denied trying to injure his wife.

He said he was acting in self-defense and only hit her with a rock after she tried to push him off the trail first.

A father of three lost his life last week after rescuing two of his kids from a rip current during a family trip to Florida.

Ryan Jennings had been at Juno Beach with his family. His wife, Emily, was on the sand making sandcastles with their youngest daughter and niece, while their older two children, a 9-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy, were out in the water.

Out of nowhere, a rip current pulled them in.

Their son, Jax, immediately ran back to shore, shouting that his dad and sister were in trouble.

Ryan quickly acted; he pushed his son toward safety and lifted his daughter above the water to keep her from going under.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue, lifeguards responded to the scene around 3:25 p.m. near Juno Beach.

Four swimmers had been in the water in an area without lifeguards on duty; all were brought back to shore and transported to a nearby hospital.

An official report confirmed the Jennings family had been rescued. The children later told officers they were struggling to stay afloat when their father came in to help them.

By the time Ryan was pulled from the water, he had lost consciousness and wasn’t breathing.

First responders immediately began CPR and other lifesaving efforts before rushing him to the hospital. Sadly, he was later declared dead at Jupiter Medical Center.

What Is a Rip Current?

A rip current is a strong, narrow stream of water that moves quickly away from the shore. It’s not the same as a rip tide – that term refers to water flowing through inlets or the openings of harbors and estuaries, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

On average, about 100 people lose their lives to rip currents each year.

Officials from the rescue team said this situation is a reminder of why it’s so important to swim at beaches with lifeguards present; trained professionals can spot dangerous conditions like rip currents and step in before things escalate.

Ryan Jennings’ mother, Gail Toti, also expressed her gratitude to the emergency crews who worked to save her family.

A Canadian mom and her young daughter, who is on the autism spectrum, have been held by ICE agents for close to a week.

Her husband says they’ve since been taken to a well-known detention center and told they can “self-deport.”

Tania Warner and her seven-year-old daughter, Ayla Luca, are originally from British Columbia, Canada. They relocated to the U.S. about five years ago after Warner married her husband, Edward Warner, who is an American citizen.

Tania Warner (left) and her daughter Ayla (center) were detained by ICE agents earlier this month

The family lives in Kingsville, Texas. They were on their way back from a baby shower when officers stopped them at a border checkpoint on March 14.

Since then, Edward says he’s only been able to catch quick calls with his wife, with each one only lasting a few minutes.

He added that she’s deeply shaken by what’s happening, and during those calls, she has had to speak quietly so officers wouldn’t overhear.

Warner also said their daughter Ayla ended up getting a rash while being held.

He was told Tania could be let go if she agreed to “self-deport” back to Canada. However, he said that’s not something they’re willing to do.

Warner said the detention doesn’t makes any sense, since they have valid paperwork to live and work in the U.S. until 2030.

Tania’s cousin, Amber Sinclair, said she has a social security card and a valid visa, so they’re not sure why she was stopped and detained.

Right now, the family is trying to gather enough money to hire a lawyer.

Texas Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, who represents the 34th district, said his office is helping push for their release.

He also pointed out that Tania has a valid work permit. He added that neither she nor her daughter, who has autism, should be in detention.

Warner and Ayla were first taken to the Rio Grande Valley Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas; they were later transferred to the Dilley immigration processing center on Friday.

The Dilley facility first opened during Barack Obama’s presidency, then shut down when Joe Biden took office.

The center has faced a lot of criticism from human rights groups, lawyers, and former detainees over its conditions; concerns have included limited access to clean drinking water, illness outbreaks, and inadequate medical care.

A woman who published a children’s book to help kids deal with loss after her husband died is now facing an aggravated murder charge tied to his death.

Kouri Richins was also convicted of fraud for collecting insurance money after her husband, Eric Richins, passed away in March 2022.

Prosecutors say she laced a cocktail he drank with fentanyl, adding about five times the legal amount.

They claim she was carrying roughly $4.5 million US in debt and believed she would receive his $4 million estate after he died.

Kouri had been involved with another man and was making plans for a future with him.

A few months after he died, Richins put out a children’s book about grief to help her sons, and other kids, deal with losing a parent.

Jurors also found her guilty on several other felony charge – one included attempted murder, linked to what officials say was another poisoning attempt weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day, when she allegedly gave her husband a sandwich laced with fentanyl.

He wasn’t killed by that incident, but it reportedly left him with hives and caused him to pass out.

In court on Monday, relatives from both families could be seen crying and embracing.

Her defence lawyer argued that Eric struggled with a painkiller addiction and had asked her to obtain opioids for him; however, she had previously told police he had no history of using illicit drugs.

Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth told the court she wanted out of the marriage but still wanted access to his money.

Richins has pleaded not guilty to every charge, and the most serious one, aggravated murder, carries a possible sentence of 25 years to life behind bars.

Many people in New Brunswick are breathing a sigh of relief following the death of notorious serial killer Allan Legere.

Legere, who was serving a life sentence behind bars, died on Monday, according to Correctional Service Canada. He was 78.

Legere was arrested by police in November 1989

Legere, who was known as the “Monster of the Miramichi,” took part in a violent robbery in June 1986 with two other men.

During the attack, an elderly couple was beaten and robbed; the male victim, John Glendenning, later succumbed to his injuries.

At the time, Legere had been released under legislated mandatory release. He was later convicted and in early 1987, received a life sentence with no chance of parole for second-degree murder.

In May 1989, Legere was at a Moncton hospital for treatment when he escaped custody. During that time, he sexually assaulted and murdered Annie Flam and sisters Linda and Donna Daughney.

He later broke into a church and brutally killed Catholic priest James Smith. After that, he abducted three motorists and held them hostage.

Police eventually caught up with Legere in November 1989. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and, in 1991, received a life sentence.

He later challenged the ruling in court; however, his appeals were rejected.

Over the years, he was also denied parole multiple times.

According to Correctional Service Canada, they will be conducting an internal review to determine the circumstances of his death.

So far, no official cause of death has been released.

People across New Brunswick are sharing their reactions following news of Legere’s death.

Among them is Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordan, who said the news brings back memories of a frightening time for the community.

In a written statement, Lordan said the city is finally closing the book on a dark chapter.
He also said his thoughts remain with the victims and the families who were affected.

Vince MacDonald, who was only a kid when Legere was evading police, said the moment feels like a heavy burden has finally been lifted from the community.

Growing up, MacDonald and his siblings would spend their time running and playing in the woods behind their home; it was just a short distance from the church where Smith was killed.

He remembers how daily life in the community changed when Legere appeared – how the entire area seemed to shut down.
