As people celebrated the Fourth of July, another round of storms swept across the country, fueled by the intense heat.

Parts of the mid-Atlantic, including Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, faced the greatest threat, along with portions of Kansas and Oklahoma.

Those areas were under a level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather, meaning strong thunderstorms and wind gusts were expected.

Lightning and other severe weather also forced an evacuation of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., before President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July speech.

People at the event were told to take shelter in nearby buildings, and the program was temporarily delayed.

Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks in New York City also kicked off a little earlier than scheduled due to the storms.

Life-threatening Heat Wave Continued

In total, more than 140 million Americans remained under heat alerts Saturday afternoon.

The heat was slightly less intense than Friday, however, it still remained dangerously hot for many areas.

In Washington, D.C., the temperature was 102 degrees, making it the hottest July Fourth on record for the city.

It broke the previous record high of 100 degrees set on July 4th, 1919.

According to officials, 51 people were evaluated for heat-related issues, 12 of whom needed to be taken to the hospital.

On Sunday, temperatures lingered in the upper 80s in New York City. In Boston, the temperature reached the mid-70s.

Thousands of Power Outages Reported

The extreme heat across the U.S. has strained the power grid in some areas.

In total, nearly 800,000 customers went without power.

According to the tracking site PowerOutage, nearly 779,000 homes went without power in the Midwest and Northeast.

The outages came as some areas were expected to face another round of severe weather and dangerous heat on Saturday.

Millions of Americans also dealt with a heat wave that blanketed much of the country.

An animal shelter in Oklahoma City is officially full after taking in more than 500 animals rescued from a property during a drug investigation.

Police carried out a search warrant at a home near Southeast 15th Street and High Avenue on June 25, after receiving a tip about suspected drug trafficking.

Officials found and seized more than 500 animals during a drug bust in Oklahoma City

While searching the property, officers found an overwhelming number of animals living inside the house as well as in outdoor pens, sheds, and stalls.

The city’s Animal Welfare team was then called in to help with the rescue effort.

By the time the operation ended, officials had removed 523 animals from the property. The group included about 470 birds, 49 dogs, several cats, and one horse.

City officials said the final number kept increasing as some of the outdoor animals had wandered into nearby wooded areas before they could be captured.

Rescue crews returned to the property multiple times and continued to find additional animals.

Many animals living in outdoor pens were also found and seized during the operation

Every animal was taken from the property due to the horrid living conditions. In total, four people were arrested.

The massive rescue has put significant pressure on the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter, forcing it to temporarily pause new intakes while staff focus on caring for the newly rescued animals.

According to the shelter’s superintendent, Johny Sandoval, the case is likely the largest animal seizure the city has ever handled.

Staff are encouraging people to adopt from the shelter to make more room for the rescued animals.

Officials arrested four individuals in the drug bust, where more than 500 animals were seized

The rescue happened just one day after the shelter warned it was already running out of space due to having rescued a large number of medium and large-breed dogs.

City officials said the temporary intake pause is meant to give staff time to safely manage the large number of animals.

While new animal intakes are on hold for now, the shelter is still open for adoptions.

Officials are also working with rescue groups and other partners to place many of the seized animals.

City leaders are asking community members to consider fostering or adopting.

In addition to the animals, police also found around 30 pounds of meth inside the property.

Four people were charged with aggravated trafficking of illegal drugs, including Luis Ricardo Gaytan, Martin Banda Sierra, Efren Valdez-Medina, and Ail Jaset Lopez.

The post Over 500 Animals Seized During Oklahoma City Drug Raid appeared first on Gazette Review.

An Arizona toddler was found alive in a hospital morgue after being declared dead following an alleged drowning, official said.

18-month-old Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday.

Nearly six hours later, at 11:52 p.m., staff discovered he was still breathing as they prepared to transfer his body.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is now reviewing what happened during those hours, as well as the events leading up to the toddler’s near-drowning.

Gilbert police said Vincent survived the incident and has since been released from the hospital.

According to a police report, the boy may have wandered into the family’s swimming pool without his parents noticing while they were watching the Super Bowl.

Police said both parents admitted to using marijuana that morning, and investigators are looking into whether drug impairment may have played a role.

A spokesperson for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the case.

Mercy Gilbert Medical Center described the incident as heartbreaking and said it carried out its own internal review. However, the hospital has not shared its findings or said whether the doctor who pronounced the child dead is still employed there.

The police report identifies the physician as Dr. A. Toosi.

According to investigators, an officer questioned the decision after the child showed signs of breathing. However, the doctor insisted the decision was correct and told the officer to let the medical team handle it.

Dr. A. Toosi’s attorney declined to discuss the case in detail, citing the ongoing investigation, patient privacy laws, and the possibility of criminal charges against the child’s parents.

His lawyer said the publicly reported details do not tell the full story.

While Vincent is not identified by name in the police report, his family later created a crowdfunding campaign to help cover his medical expenses.

A man who answered the phone at the family’s home declined to comment.

According to the fundraising page, Vincent is now breathing with the help of a ventilator. While he seemed to have avoided severe brain damage, he will still need ongoing medical monitoring and extensive rehabilitation.

The incident happened at around 5:38 p.m. on Feb. 8, when someone called 911 after Vincent was found face down in the family’s backyard pool. A relative began CPR before emergency crews arrived.

He was rushed to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, where emergency room workers continued life-saving efforts.

According to the police report, Dr. Toosi informed the child’s family that Vincent had died before officially pronouncing him dead at 6:20 p.m.

Several people present in the emergency room, including the child’s parents and police officers, later told investigators they believed the toddler still showed signs of breathing.

About an hour later, as hospital staff prepared to move Vincent to the hospital’s morgue, an officer reported hearing another breath from the child.

Roughly an hour afterwards, the same detective again noticed what appeared to be breathing.

Hospital staff reportedly believed the movements were agonal respirations, involuntary gasps that can occur after the heart has stopped, and attributed them to earlier resuscitation efforts.

Vincent was then placed in the morgue, where temperatures are kept between 36 and 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

More than four hours later, when medical examiner personnel arrived to collect his body, they discovered he was still breathing.

His family was immediately notified, and Vincent was flown to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

The post Arizona Toddler Found Alive in Morgue After Being Declared Dead appeared first on Gazette Review.

The case happened during a family trip in 2024 and was detailed in a report published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

According to the report, the boy woke up to find a bat covering his nose and mouth. He knocked it away, and his father caught it in a pot before releasing it outside.

Because the boy didn’t have any visible bite marks or scratches, and the bat didn’t seem to be acting strangely, his parents didn’t think they had to take him to the doctor.

About 19 days later, the boy started experiencing swelling and numbness on his face.

Over the next several days, his family took him to emergency clinics and the hospital as doctors tried to determine what was causing his symptoms.

At his first visit, doctors believed he could have Bell’s palsy, a condition that temporarily weakens the muscles on one side of the face.

He was prescribed an antiviral medication commonly used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses.

He later returned to the hospital, where doctors suspected he had herpes gingivostomatitis, a viral infection that affects the mouth and gums.

When the weakness on the right side of his face got worse the following day, his parents took him back to the doctor.

While waiting to be admitted, his condition quickly deteriorated.

He developed a fever of 39C (102F), had trouble swallowing, became confused, and experienced visual hallucinations.

He was later placed on a ventilator and transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit.

Doctors at the University of Manitoba’s Department of Pediatrics and Child Health soon suspected rabies.

A few days later, testing confirmed he had rabies; the Canadian Food Inspection Agency also identified a bat strain of the rabies virus.

The boy died 17 days after being admitted to the hospital.

The report noted that he had no recent travel outside Canada, no tick bites, no known allergies, and was not in contact with anyone who was sick.

Human rabies cases are extremely uncommon in Canada.

According to the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, there have been just 28 rabies-related deaths in the country since 1924.

The association credits long-running vaccination programs for keeping rabies cases low and says the disease could return if those efforts stop.

Health experts say anyone who has direct contact with a bat should receive rabies post-exposure treatment as soon as possible after the encounter.

Once rabies symptoms begin, the infection is almost always fatal.

The post 11-Year-Old Boy Dies From Rabies After Walking Up to a Bat On His face appeared first on Gazette Review.

A Michigan couple is facing second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture charges after their 7-year-old son died following years of severe neglect.

The case began on Nov. 4, 2025, when first responders were sent to a Flint Township home after a report of a child having a medical emergency.

The boy, identified as Casper O’Brien, was taken to Hurley Medical Center but died soon after arriving at the hospital.

The boy’s mother was identified as 41-year-old Jessica O’Brien

After investigating, Genesee County prosecutors charged Casper’s parents, 40-year-old Damien O’Brien and 41-year-old Jessica O’Brien for child abuse and second-degree murder.

At the time of his death, Casper measured 50.5 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds.

Prosecutors say the case points to prolonged and extreme neglect that caused the child to suffer significantly over time.

An autopsy determined Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that leads to heart failure. Morbid obesity was listed as a contributing factor.

7-year-old Casper was classified as morbidly obese at the time of his death

According to the CDC, a healthy weight for a 7-year-old boy of his height is typically between 50 and 73 pounds.

Investigators also learned Casper had received almost no medical care. Prosecutors said he did not have a pediatrician and had reportedly seen a doctor only once in his life.

Authorities noted that the family had health insurance and the father was steadily employed.

They also pointed out that on the same morning Casper died, the parents contacted a veterinarian to arrange treatment for their dog.

The couple also has a 5-year-old daughter. Prosecutors said neither child had been enrolled in school or come to the attention of government agencies, meaning child protective services had never visited the home.

When officers responded to the house that day, the property’s owner also arrived because he had become concerned about the condition of the home.

Casper’s father and mother have been charged with second-degree murder, child abuse, and torture

Investigators said the tenants had been leaving rent payments outside instead of allowing the landlord inside.

According to police, the home was filled with so much clutter, to the point where it resembled a hoarding situation. Prosecutors said the conditions inside the home and the lack of care were so severe that they decided to file a murder charge.

So far, no one has been able to reach the couple’s attorney for comment.

Damien and Jessica O’Brien remain in the Genesee County Jail without bond and are scheduled to return to court on July 2.

Authorities found the intact remains of 117 dogs while searching Miranda’s Rescue, a Northern California animal sanctuary at the center of an animal cruelty and fraud investigation.

Authorities said many of the dogs appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.

The remains were recovered over the course of a three-day search that wrapped up Thursday at the property in Fortuna.

At a second excavation site nearby, investigators also found 21 dog skulls, hundreds of scattered bones and six loose microchips.

Veterinarians from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with forensic specialists, inspected 70 of the recovered dogs at the scene.

Initial findings suggested that many of the dogs had been shot before they died. The other 47 were not examined at the site as investigators ran out of time, however, all 117 remains were taken as evidence.

Officials said most of the dogs had microchips, and investigators are now reviewing that information to determine the animals’ identities.

Search teams also found more canine remains in a nearby section of the field, but those were in such an advanced state of decomposition that prosecutors agreed they did not need to be removed.

Investigators noted the location before leaving the remains undisturbed.

Inside a barn on the property, authorities identified what they believe may have been an area where dogs were killed.

In total, over 600 dog collars were also also discovered from the area.

This was the second time investigators searched Miranda’s Rescue, which describes itself as a no-kill animal sanctuary. The facility took in dogs from shelters and private owners across California, including many from the Bay Area.

The latest search warrant gave investigators permission to search buildings and property linked to the rescue and its founder, Shannon Miranda, for evidence related to suspected animal cruelty and fraud.

Authorities also excavated areas where ground-penetrating radar detected possible burial sites.

Sheriff William Honsal said the investigation is still in its early stages. Detectives are continuing to sort through evidence, analyze records and interview witnesses before deciding whether criminal charges are warranted.

As of Friday, no arrests have been made, and Miranda’s Rescue remained open.

Once investigators finish reviewing the evidence, the case will be handed to prosecutors if they believe there is enough to support charges involving animal cruelty, fraud or other possible crimes.

The investigation began on April 22 after the sheriff’s office received what it described as credible reports alleging felony animal abuse, cruelty, fraud and conspiracy involving the rescue.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a news conference for Monday afternoon in Eureka to provide an update on the investigation.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office by phone or email.

The post 117 Dead Dogs Found at Northern California Rescue, Many Believed to Have Been Shot appeared first on Gazette Review.

When Angelica Garcia went to renew her food stamp benefits earlier this year, she thought the process would be familiar. Instead, it turned into a long and frustrating ordeal.

Garcia, who is a single mother, submitted her paperwork, then spent weeks trying to get answers.

She made repeated calls to Arizona’s Department of Economic Security, often waiting on hold only for the call to disconnect.

She also made trips to an understaffed office, where lengthy waits for assistance became the norm.

The delays meant Garcia went without benefits for two months before her case was finally approved again in June. During that time, her family relied on food-bank donations and inexpensive staples such as rice, beans and tortillas to get by.

After three years on food stamps, Garcia said she’s used to the challenges that come with the system, but lately it feels like things are getting harder and garder.

Since President Donald Trump’s tax and spending law took effect last July, more than 4.7 million people across the U.S. have lost their SNAP benefits.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that represents roughly 11% of all participants as of March.

Arizona has been hit harder than any other state, where the number of SNAP recipients have decreased by roughly 50%.

State data through the end of May shows that more than 457,000 Arizona residents are no longer receiving benefits, nearly 196,000 of whom are children.

Between March 2025 and March 2026, Arizona’s food stamp enrollment fell by more than half.

The legislation cuts SNAP spending by about $187 billion over the next decade, reducing overall funding by roughly 17%.

Starting in October next year, states will have to meet certain federal performance standards. Those that fall short could be hit with financial penalties and will also be responsible for covering more of the program’s administrative costs.

Experts and state officials say Arizona’s enrollment has fallen especially quickly because the state moved faster than many others to implement the new federal rules.

Officials in Governor Katie Hobbs’ administration have argued that complying with the federal requirements is necessary to avoid major financial penalties that could further affect residents who depend on food assistance.

The White House has defended the changes, saying they are intended to focus benefits on American citizens and reduce waste, fraud and abuse through greater cost-sharing with states.

The USDA, which oversees the food stamp program, says the new work requirements are partly responsible for the decline in participation across the country.

The post Millions Face Food Stamp Losses Under Trump Cuts appeared first on Gazette Review.

An 18-year-old who was thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in New York City’s Central Park on Wednesday has died, police said.

The teen was riding in the carriage with four other passengers when the horse suddenly ran off shortly before 3 p.m.

According to authorities, at least two people were thrown from the carriage as it sped through the park.

The teenager was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. The other passengers did not require medical attention.

According to a representative from the union that represents carriage drivers and workers, the driver had briefly stepped away from the carriage to help take a photo for the passengers, which is against the rules.

The horse involved had only been working in the park for about six weeks.

Union official Alexander Kemp said he wants a thorough investigation into what happened.

He also said safety has become a bigger concern in Central Park, with horse-drawn carriages sharing the roads with e-bikes, delivery vehicles and pedicabs.

Central Park has long been known for its horse drawn carriages

Video footage of the incident that have since been shared online, shows the horse racing through the park while passengers try to escape the moving carriage.

Another clip showed the carriage overturning after striking part of another carriage along one of the park’s crowded roadways.

The incident has once again put Central Park’s iconic horse-drawn carriage rides – which have been part of the park for more than 150 years – in the spotlight.

Supporters say they are a beloved New York tradition that attracts tourists and supports local jobs.

Critics, on the other hand, say the rides can be dangerous for both horses and people and believe it’s time for the industry to come to an end.

The victim, Romanch Mahajan, from India, was visiting New York with his parents

The tragedy comes just days after another horse-related incident in the park involving the collapse and death of a carriage horse.

Following the latest accident, the Central Park Conservancy renewed its call to end horse-drawn carriage rides in the park.

The organization said the death of a young visitor should prompt city leaders to reconsider whether the industry still belongs in one of the country’s busiest public spaces.

Spanning nearly 850 acres, Central Park welcomes millions of visitors every year and remains one of New York City’s most popular attractions.

The post Teen Dies After Being Thrown From Horse-Drawn Carriage In New York City appeared first on Gazette Review.

Several people stepped in to help after a private jet crashed and burst into flames after crashing onto a highway in Laredo, Texas, on Tuesday night.

Videos from the scene showed the aircraft badly damaged, lying on its side and split apart as thick smoke and flames poured from the wreckage.

Despite the danger, a group of people ran toward the burning plane.

Video footage showed two individuals carrying tools, including a sledgehammer and a shovel, which they used to break through part of the aircraft.

With that, several passengers were able to get out of the jet. Other video clips released by police showed firefighters putting out the blaze while the wreckage remained scattered across the highway.

The rescue also proved to be difficult as thick smoke repeatedly drove officers away from the wreckage.

One witness, Zayra Garza, who recorded one of the videos, said the scene was surreal and unlike anything she had ever witnessed. Her biggest concern was the fire, as it could cause the aircraft to explode at any moment.

Authorities later confirmed that one of the six people aboard did not survive.

The victim was identified as Joshua Baer, the CEO of Capital Factory

Investigators later identified the victim as Josh Baer, founder of Austin-based venture capital firm Capital Factory.

The confirmation came after Texas Senator Ted Cruz paid tribute to Baer on social media, describing him as an influential figure in the worlds of innovation.

Capital Factory also released a statement expressing grief over the loss and praising Baer’s leadership and lasting impact on the organization.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft involved was a Cessna 680A business jet. It had departed from San José del Cabo, Mexico, and was heading to Austin when it crashed just south of Laredo around 10 p.m.

Federal investigators are now trying to determine what went wrong. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened an investigation, with the NTSB leading the effort.

Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño urged people not to jump to conclusions while investigators continue to gather evidence.

He said aviation accidents can take time to fully understand and stressed the importance of allowing the process to unfold.

Treviño also praised local police, firefighters, paramedics and other emergency personnel who responded to the crash.

He said their quick actions helped contain the fire, secure the area and protect nearby residents.

During a news briefing, the mayor described it as remarkable that the accident did not result in far more casualties.

Investigators said the plane struck a vehicle traveling on the highway during the crash. Five first responders were also treated for smoke inhalation after working at the scene.

The crash occurred on Loop 20, forcing authorities to close the roadway in both directions.

Officials warned that the highway would remain shut down for an extended period while crews continue to remove debris from the site.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash. However, authorities said the plane was reportedly having mechanical problems shortly before it went down.

The FBI is assisting at the scene alongside other federal agencies. Investigators are also asking anyone with video footage, including dashcam recordings, to share it with authorities.

The post One Dead After Private Jet Crashes on Texas Highway appeared first on Gazette Review.
