In case you did not know, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) released Windows 10 early this Wednesday. Computers around the globe began to update their version of Windows.

If you are currently operating on Windows 7 or Windows 8, then the upgrade to Windows 10 will be free. However, this is only if you update within a year time span. Microsoft seems to be receiving much more positive feedback than when they revealed Windows 8. In 2012, the new platform and interface was different and confusing for some users. Rather than a simple desktop with the classic start menu, they introduced large, eye-catching tiles.

Many anticipating the Windows 8 release were disappointed, which led to the dismissal of the Microsoft employee in charge of the Windows 8 development. Steve Sinofsky may have angered many with Windows 8, but could Windows 10 make an amazing comeback?

Microsoft made it short and simple, and reassured that “the familiar Start menu is back.”

At a recent Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) earnings call, questions were asked about the company’s two developing social media platforms. Investors and analysts inquired about these two businesses and Zuckerberg’s goal moving forward.

Instagram has already seen some changes, through a big update released earlier this year. This update for the photo and video-sharing platform introduced some of Facebook’s targeting tools used with ads. Brands and other businesses looking to promote their product or foundation can make slideshows containing multiple pictures, and even include links.

Although Instagram is succeeding in its development, Messenger’s path to making Facebook money was not as straightforward. However, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave investors a basic outline for the company’s plan in the earnings call.

The first step to making Messenger a cash cow was to wait for it to reach one billion users. Zuckerberg has explained before that he likes to wait until the user base is high before attempting to make the product an effective business. Messenger does not meet that standard yet, coming in at around 700 million monthly users (that are active).

This plan is similar to what the company did to improve business and the News Feed in Facebook. Zuckerberg said “The playbook that we’re gonna run with Messenger and WhatsApp is kinda similar to how we thought about building a business in Facebook and News Feed.”

In 2006, Facebook was urged to make a change to their monetization by analysts and investors. They wanted to increase monetization by placing more ads and banners throughout the website. However, the company had a different and more user-friendly approach to monetize faster. Facebook believed that these types of ads and banners would be more efficient if there was”an organic interaction between the people using the product and businesses.”

To carry out this plan, Facebook pushed companies and brands to make a free Page for their business. They then urged them to find ways for users and customers to give these pages a thumbs up (or a like). Facebook in return gave them data on the traffic coming into their Page and how they were bringing in business.

After creating this interaction between the business and the user, Facebook allows businesses to pay for a post to become promoted. This worked out for Facebook because they can ask these businesses for much more money for a promoted post over a banner ad.

Many users of the messaging app “WhatsApp” as well as some on Messenger already use the service to interact with businesses.

This spring, Facebook made their plan to make money off of Messenger a bit clearer at a developers conference. One feature they talked about implementing was a way for companies and businesses to send shipping updates, receipts, and other customer-service support tools to the user.

If this plan is anything like what they carried out with Facebook, monetization may start out slow. However, as more and more users use the tools provided to interact with businesses, they will then see some money come from Messenger. This is a more natural way than plastering banner ads onto the app.

Developing a Relationship

Zuckerberg says that when an organic relationship between a customer and business is created “it will end up being a massive multiplier on the value of the monetization down the road, when we really work on that, and really focus on that in a bigger way.”

He also requests investors for some patience in order to carry out his plan correctly.

Companies and businesses may not like Facebook’s plan as much as Zuckerberg does. They believe that Facebook’s way of creating a relationship between them and users were not feasible anymore. These brands thought they devoted too much effort and time in trying to get Likes on their Pages.

Although, the well-known video site has had trouble making much of a profit, the website has noticed a massive increase in viewers. Kordestani says that users are investing more time watching YouTube videos than ever before. On average, the amount of time viewers spend watching content has skyrocketed 60 percent. This impressive growth is the fastest increase in viewing time YouTube has seen Kordestani adds. So what factors contribute to this massive growth that YouTube is seeing?

Mobile devices play a major role in the increase in viewing time. The average mobile user spent double the time watching YouTube clips in 2014. On mobile devices, an average YouTube user spends around 40 minutes watching their favorite content.

YouTube has spiraled off from a site where users watch one video and get off, to one that keeps their users hooked for almost an hour.They have transformed YouTube in a way that keeps their viewers on the website. Google has also added in multiple features to hook viewers in and keep them entertained longer. Features such as auto-playing videos, suggested videos, and the “What to Watch” section have all aided in this increase in viewing time.

Kordestani says “The number of users coming to YouTube, who start at the YouTube homepage similar to the way they might turn on their TV, is up over three times year-on-year,” and “once users are in YouTube, they are spending more time per session watching videos.”

Moving Forward

YouTube has had an impact on the even younger generation of children. Tech Crunch wrote “According to a recent study from Miner & Co., TV is no longer the first choice for kids’ entertainment with 57 percent of parents reporting that their child prefers mobile devices to TV when it comes to video viewing. Additionally, 58 percent of kids in households with tablets have their own device, the study also discovered, and half the kids, when disciplined, will have their tablet taken away and are left “only” with TV.”

A recent study found that teens saw YouTube stars having more of a powerful effect on them than Hollywood stars. One “role model” for teenagers include the comedy team of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, making up the popular Smosh channel. Another influential YouTube star is Swedish gamer, Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, commonly known as Pewdiepie.

This is all great news for YouTube, but the problem of trying to make more of a profit is their next challenge. Last year, the website raked in about 4$ billion for Google. In an earnings conference call, Google executives chose to be quiet on YouTube’s profits in 2015.

The takeaway from this is that YouTube is headed in the right direction. Advertisers running videos ads have increased 40 percent over last year. These advertisers are also paying 60 percent more on advertising than in 2014. If you’re tired of seeing ads, just remember they are better than 10 minute commercial breaks on TV!

Self-driving cars have been gaining lots of attention, especially with companies such as Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)(NASDAQ:GOOG) and Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) advancing their own autonomous vehicles.

The future of transportation seems to focus on saving greenhouse gas emissions, as well as using clean energy. Would it be possible to combine these two factors and still be economically aware in the auto-making industry?

A study located at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory had the answer. The goal of this study was to analyze the efficiency of driverless taxis in urban areas across the globe. These taxis would have to greatly minimize greenhouse gas emissions and be cost-effective.

The researchers concluded that a driverless taxi in 2030 powered by electricity would reduce green house gas emissions greatly. An autonomous taxi would decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 63 to 82 percent compared to a hybrid vehicle used for personal driving.

The Berkeley Lab also compared a driverless taxi to a 2014 gasoline powered, private vehicle. The self-driving taxi would release 90 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than the gasoline fueled car. The key to emitting less greenhouse gases? The answer is right-sizing.

Right-sizing involves using the right driverless taxi that is convenient for the customer. For example, if two people needed to use a driverless taxi, a two-seater would be the best match. If five people with a good amount of luggage needed the service, a larger self-driving taxi would be sent.

“When we first started looking at autonomous vehicles, we found that, of all the variables we could consider, the use of autonomous vehicles as part of a shared transit system seemed to be the biggest lever that pointed to lower energy use per mile,” Jeffrey Greenblatt, study co-author said.

A Clean Future

Automakers everywhere are developing autonomous driving, energy-efficient technology. Right-sizing allows these manufacturers to produce equipment that is cost-effective for them and the customer. At the same time, this technology is environmentally friendly, so its a win for both sides.

Keep in mind that most road trips in the US are being done by a single person. A small, two-seat, autonomous taxi would save double the amount when you take into account energy and gas emissions. If this technology receives the support it needs, this can definitely become a reality.

According to the study, driverless taxis have the necessary environment to take off  by 2030. In the future, power plants are supposed to emit less pollution by taking advantage of cleaner and more renewable energy materials. A much cleaner electric grid is also underway.

How cost-effective would a driverless taxi be? As claimed by the study, the average private gasoline vehicle racks up 12,000 miles a year. Using this information, a self-driving taxi would be a bit more expensive when it comes to initial investment.

However, compared to a gasoline-powered taxi in the US (averaging 40,000 to 70,000 miles per year), the autonomous taxi would beat it in both cost and emission rate.
