Mike Tyson was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1966. His father abandoned the family when Mike was 2 years old. In his teenage years, Mike did a lot of petty crimes, and got in fights with people who made fun of his lisp. He was arrested 38 times by the time he was 13, and soon ended up in juvenile prison. There, his boxing abilities were noticed by a juvenile detention councilor who was also a former boxer. He introduced him to legendary boxing trainer Cus D’Amato, who became Mike’s manager, trainer and father figure. When Mike’s mother died when he was 16, D’Amato also became Mike’s legal guardian.

As a fighter, Mike’s biggest qualities were his speed and his strength, which made a lot of fighters intimidated by him. He also had great coordination, timing and accuracy. He boxed with his hands high, in the Peek-a-Boo style created by Cus D’Amato. His trademark combination included a right hook shot low at the body followed up with another right handed uppercut to the jaw. This combo knocked out many of his opponents, such as Lorenzo Boyd, Jose Ribalta and Jesse Ferguson.

From 1987 to 1990, Tyson was the undisputed world heavyweight champion, winning fight after fight and earning millions. He won the WBC title in November 1986 at the young age of twenty and became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. He then went on to win the WBA title from James Smith, and beating Tony Tucker for the IBF championship. He cemented his position as the best in the world, by winning against fighters like Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tubbs, Tyrell Biggs, Larry Holmes, and Michael Spinks.

But outside the ring, Mike’s life was more complicated. His first marriage ended in divorce. He was jailed for rape from 1992 to 1995, then again for assault from On February 5, 1999 to 2000.  He regained his WBC heavyweight title in 1996. He then won the WBA crown by beating Bruce Seldon, but lost Evander Holyfield in November 1996.

In the 1997 rematch, he bit a chunk of Holyfield’s ear of, which remains one of the most controversial events in sports history. He was fined $3 million and had his boxing license suspended until 1998. He then went back to boxing, winning some fights, losing others, until he retired in 2005, saying he “lost the passion for the sport.”

  1. Whoever published the photo of Tyson and his manager obviously didn’t realize that they misspelled his manager’s last name in the caption “Mike and his mentor Cus D’Amano”. D’Amano is spelled D’Amato.
