A father of three lost his life last week after rescuing two of his kids from a rip current during a family trip to Florida.

Ryan Jennings had been at Juno Beach with his family. His wife, Emily, was on the sand making sandcastles with their youngest daughter and niece, while their older two children, a 9-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy, were out in the water.

Out of nowhere, a rip current pulled them in.

Their son, Jax, immediately ran back to shore, shouting that his dad and sister were in trouble.

Ryan quickly acted; he pushed his son toward safety and lifted his daughter above the water to keep her from going under.

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Ocean Rescue, lifeguards responded to the scene around 3:25 p.m. near Juno Beach.

Four swimmers had been in the water in an area without lifeguards on duty; all were brought back to shore and transported to a nearby hospital.

An official report confirmed the Jennings family had been rescued. The children later told officers they were struggling to stay afloat when their father came in to help them.

By the time Ryan was pulled from the water, he had lost consciousness and wasn’t breathing.

First responders immediately began CPR and other lifesaving efforts before rushing him to the hospital. Sadly, he was later declared dead at Jupiter Medical Center.

What Is a Rip Current?

A rip current is a strong, narrow stream of water that moves quickly away from the shore. It’s not the same as a rip tide – that term refers to water flowing through inlets or the openings of harbors and estuaries, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

On average, about 100 people lose their lives to rip currents each year.

Officials from the rescue team said this situation is a reminder of why it’s so important to swim at beaches with lifeguards present; trained professionals can spot dangerous conditions like rip currents and step in before things escalate.

Ryan Jennings’ mother, Gail Toti, also expressed her gratitude to the emergency crews who worked to save her family.

A Canadian mom and her young daughter, who is on the autism spectrum, have been held by ICE agents for close to a week.

Her husband says they’ve since been taken to a well-known detention center and told they can “self-deport.”

Tania Warner and her seven-year-old daughter, Ayla Luca, are originally from British Columbia, Canada. They relocated to the U.S. about five years ago after Warner married her husband, Edward Warner, who is an American citizen.

Tania Warner (left) and her daughter Ayla (center) were detained by ICE agents earlier this month

The family lives in Kingsville, Texas. They were on their way back from a baby shower when officers stopped them at a border checkpoint on March 14.

Since then, Edward says he’s only been able to catch quick calls with his wife, with each one only lasting a few minutes.

He added that she’s deeply shaken by what’s happening, and during those calls, she has had to speak quietly so officers wouldn’t overhear.

Warner also said their daughter Ayla ended up getting a rash while being held.

He was told Tania could be let go if she agreed to “self-deport” back to Canada. However, he said that’s not something they’re willing to do.

Warner said the detention doesn’t makes any sense, since they have valid paperwork to live and work in the U.S. until 2030.

Tania’s cousin, Amber Sinclair, said she has a social security card and a valid visa, so they’re not sure why she was stopped and detained.

Right now, the family is trying to gather enough money to hire a lawyer.

Texas Congressman Vicente Gonzalez, who represents the 34th district, said his office is helping push for their release.

He also pointed out that Tania has a valid work permit. He added that neither she nor her daughter, who has autism, should be in detention.

Warner and Ayla were first taken to the Rio Grande Valley Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas; they were later transferred to the Dilley immigration processing center on Friday.

The Dilley facility first opened during Barack Obama’s presidency, then shut down when Joe Biden took office.

It reopened in early 2025 to house detained families together.

The center has faced a lot of criticism from human rights groups, lawyers, and former detainees over its conditions; concerns have included limited access to clean drinking water, illness outbreaks, and inadequate medical care.

A woman who published a children’s book to help kids deal with loss after her husband died is now facing an aggravated murder charge tied to his death.

Kouri Richins was also convicted of fraud for collecting insurance money after her husband, Eric Richins, passed away in March 2022.

Prosecutors say she laced a cocktail he drank with fentanyl, adding about five times the legal amount.

Kouri self-published a children’s book about grief after her husband’s death

They claim she was carrying roughly $4.5 million US in debt and believed she would receive his $4 million estate after he died.

Kouri had been involved with another man and was making plans for a future with him.

A few months after he died, Richins put out a children’s book about grief to help her sons, and other kids, deal with losing a parent.

Jurors also found her guilty on several other felony charge – one included attempted murder, linked to what officials say was another poisoning attempt weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day, when she allegedly gave her husband a sandwich laced with fentanyl.

He wasn’t killed by that incident, but it reportedly left him with hives and caused him to pass out.

In court on Monday, relatives from both families could be seen crying and embracing.

Her defence lawyer argued that Eric struggled with a painkiller addiction and had asked her to obtain opioids for him; however, she had previously told police he had no history of using illicit drugs.

Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth told the court she wanted out of the marriage but still wanted access to his money.

Richins has pleaded not guilty to every charge, and the most serious one, aggravated murder, carries a possible sentence of 25 years to life behind bars.

Many people in New Brunswick are breathing a sigh of relief following the death of notorious serial killer Allan Legere.

Legere, who was serving a life sentence behind bars, died on Monday, according to Correctional Service Canada. He was 78.

Legere was arrested by police in November 1989

Legere, who was known as the “Monster of the Miramichi,” took part in a violent robbery in June 1986 with two other men.

During the attack, an elderly couple was beaten and robbed; the male victim, John Glendenning, later succumbed to his injuries.

At the time, Legere had been released under legislated mandatory release. He was later convicted and in early 1987, received a life sentence with no chance of parole for second-degree murder.

In May 1989, Legere was at a Moncton hospital for treatment when he escaped custody. During that time, he sexually assaulted and murdered Annie Flam and sisters Linda and Donna Daughney.

He later broke into a church and brutally killed Catholic priest James Smith. After that, he abducted three motorists and held them hostage.

Police eventually caught up with Legere in November 1989. He was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and, in 1991, received a life sentence.

He later challenged the ruling in court; however, his appeals were rejected.

Over the years, he was also denied parole multiple times.

According to Correctional Service Canada, they will be conducting an internal review to determine the circumstances of his death.

So far, no official cause of death has been released.

People across New Brunswick are sharing their reactions following news of Legere’s death.

Among them is Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordan, who said the news brings back memories of a frightening time for the community.

In a written statement, Lordan said the city is finally closing the book on a dark chapter.
He also said his thoughts remain with the victims and the families who were affected.

Vince MacDonald, who was only a kid when Legere was evading police, said the moment feels like a heavy burden has finally been lifted from the community.

Growing up, MacDonald and his siblings would spend their time running and playing in the woods behind their home; it was just a short distance from the church where Smith was killed.

He remembers how daily life in the community changed when Legere appeared – how the entire area seemed to shut down.

Severe storms swept across parts of the central United States last week, bringing powerful tornadoes that destroyed buildings and left at least eight people dead.

A tornado watch was in effect for parts of New York, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania until 8 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday.

Earlier Friday afternoon, a powerful thunderstorm resulted in a destructive tornado that killed four people and injured several others.

The tornado was later classified as an EF-3, with wind speeds reaching up to 150 mph.

Officials with the Branch County Sheriff’s Office said another three people died and 12 were hurt after the tornado tore through the Union Lake area.

Several of the injured were taken to hospital, though the full extent of their injuries has not yet been confirmed.

Patricia Polacco, a Union City resident and author of a well-known children’s book, shared information online about resources available to people in the community who need help.

Near Cass County, one person died and several others were injured when the tornado struckthe region. The storm also damaged several large buildings, causing local officials declared a state of emergency.

The National Weather Service said the tornado, which it described as a “particularly dangerous situation,” was fueled by a lone supercell thunderstorm.

After reports of damage in St. Joseph, Cass, and Branch counties, the State Emergency Operations Center was activated.

In the Three Rivers area, a tornado sent pieces of buildings flying through the air; large parts of a nearby roof were also torn away. It is still unclear whether anyone was injured.

Shanna Ortiz, a resident of Three Rivers, said the damage across the area is widespread, with fallen trees, ripped-off roofs, and power lines lying everywhere.

Ortiz explained that she had just arrived to pick up her daughter from daycare when the warning sirens started going off.

Staff at the daycare told everyone to stay inside.

She said the group gathered in a bathroom for safety, where they tried to keep the children calm by singing songs and playing games.

At one point they heard a loud roaring sound, and several people felt their ears pop.

Another resident, Amber Jaseph, said she saw the tornado approaching as she hurried to pick up her baby from daycare.

When she looked out the window, the tornado had already moved down the strip; her voice shook with emotion as she described what happened.

She said she feels incredibly grateful that God protected her daughter, mother, sister, and the rest of her family during the ordeal.

Nelson Storms, another Three Rivers resident, said he was at home when the tornado hit. Luckily, he managed to get to the basement just in time.

He said that as soon as he got to the basement, it sounded like the house above him was being “shredded to pieces.

The post Severe Storms Leaves 8 Dead Across Central U.S. appeared first on Gazette Review.

A little dog who was left behind when her family moved away is now getting a second chance, thanks to a local rescue group called Logan’s Legacy.

In a recent Instagram post, the organization shared the emotional story of the tiny pup, who had been abandoned in Bakersfield, California after her owners moved away.

They described her as confused and alone, waiting for someone who was never going to come back.

According to the caption, the family packed up and left her behind, scared and by herself.

The rescue said a kindhearted individual eventually stepped in and brought the dog to safety, placing her in their care.

By that point, however, trauma had already set in.

She wouldn’t allow anyone to touch her and seemed wary of anyone reaching out a hand. The group wrote that she simply “didn’t understand kindness.”

In one of the videos shared online, the pup can be seen going into a defensive posture, snapping nervously as someone approaches her.

The rescue shared that they later brought the dog to a trusted veterinarian so she could get checked out and receive proper care.

They explained that the vet found an ulcer in one of her eyes and is still being treated for it.

Aside from that, she’s in stable condition and otherwise healthy.

In their Instagram update, the team said they spent time sitting beside her and gently petting her.

They mentioned that it may have been the first time she had ever experienced that kind of attention.

Since taking her in, the rescue has posted a follow-up photo and video.

The small dog was found abandoned after her owners moved away without her

In the new clips, the once-frightened pup is curled up comfortably inside, wearing a cozy winter sweater.

Her body language is noticeably more relaxed than before.

The group wrote that she’s no longer alone or forgotten.

Logan’s Legacy has arranged for the little pup to move into a foster home, where she can slowly start to understand what trust and love feel like.

For now, though, the rescue says she’s warm, safe, and in good hands.

The post Rescue Steps In to Help Dog That was Left Behind When Her Family Moved Away appeared first on Gazette Review.

A rufugee with limited vision was found dead just days after immigration officers dropped him off alone at a coffee shop.

56-year-old Nurul Amin Shah Alam, who did not speak English, went missing on February 19 after being released from the Erie County jail.

Authorities said agents left him at the cafe rather than at the patrol station.

About five days later, at around 8:30 p.m., his body was found a few miles from the spot where he had been dropped off.

His funeral took place Thursday, with dozens gathering at a local mosque to pray before he was laid to rest at a cemetery.

Still, many questions remain about how he died and what happened in the days after his release.

A spokesperson for US Customs and Border Protection said officers gave him what they described as a courtesy ride to the coffee shop; the location was near his last known address and considered a safe place for him to go.

The spokesperson added that at the time, he did not appear to have disabilities, mobility issues nor did he show signs of distress.

The medical examiner has not yet confirmed Shah Alam’s official cause of death; however, an earlier statement from the city indicated it may have been health-related.

On Wednesday, Buffalo’s mayor described the death as “preventable” and said the community deserves clear answers about how it happened.

Tim Kennedy, a New York Congressman, also called for a thorough investigation at the local, state, and federal levels.

The case is comes at a time when more and more people are questioning how immigration officers are treating individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

He Had Spent a Year in Custody

Shah Alam, who fled Myanmar as a refugee, spent much of 2025 behind bars awaiting trial on criminal charges that were eventually settled through a misdemeanor plea agreement.

Before coming to the U.S. with his wife and two children, he worked in construction in Malaysia.

According to reports, he had only been in the U.S. for a few months when he was arrested.

One of his children said the arrest stemmed from a misunderstanding with police.
Shah Alam had been walking outside using a curtain rod as a makeshift walking stick when he accidentally wandered onto private property.

Because he struggled with English, he reportedly did not understand officers’ instructions to drop the rod and was taken into custody.

The post Blind Refugee Found Dead in New York Days After Being Dropped Off Alone by Immigration Agents appeared first on Gazette Review.

Two young men lost their lives after being exposed to hydrogen sulfide while working a cleaning job in Michigan.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a home in Clyde Township after reports that two workers had become unconscious while cleaning a residential well.

When authorities arrived, they detected a strong chemical odor in the air.

Hagle called 911 before going down the well himself to help Kremmer, who had stopped responding to him

Daniel Hagle, 20, and Michael Kammer Jr., 21, had been working beneath the home’s porch when a chemical reaction produced hydrogen sulfide gas, filling the confined area where they were located.

Because of the dangerous fumes, deputies were forced to retreat and wait for firefighters to arrive with protective gear.

Both men were taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Several first responders were also transported for decontamination as a precaution.

Sheriff Matt King said Hagle attempted to rescue Kammer after noticing his co-worker had stopped responding. Before he climbed into the well, Hagle had called 911 for help.

When Kammer collapsed from the exposure, Hagle tried to help but was also overcome by the toxic gas.

Authorities explained that the men had used the cleaning substance before. However, this time the work was carried out in a tight, enclosed space. Officials said muriatic acid reacted with chemicals inside the well, releasing dangerous fumes.

Kammer was set to get married later this year

The job was one Kammer had been doing since his teenage years. Three additional co-workers were hospitalized after being exposed to the gas.

Kammer’s mother said she collapsed upon seeing her son and struggled to breathe.

She also recalled that he had to be brought out without clothing because the toxic chemicals had soaked into his clothes during the incident.

Fundraisers have since been launched on GoFundMe to help support the families of Hagle and Kammer.

As of now, the campaigns have brought in over $31,000, thanks to contributions from hundreds of donors.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau confirmed that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Their families are devastated and are holding onto the memories they shared with them.

Jenny Kammer said the 21-year-old was the type of person who would help anyone without hesitation and would even give someone the shirt off his back. She also shared that he was planning to get married later this year.

The post Man Dies Trying to Save Unconscious Co-Worker After Toxic Fume Exposure appeared first on Gazette Review.

Nine skiers are missing for after an avalanche struck near the town of Truckee, California. So far, six people have been rescued.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that the slide occurred at Castle Peak, a well-known backcountry skiing area close to Lake Tahoe.

Officials explained that the six survivors were reached by rescue crews who worked for hours in dangerous conditions to get to them.

Two of those rescued were taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said the search effort is still underway; however, progress will depend on the weather conditions.

Early reports suggested that 16 people had been caught in the avalanche, but authorities later clarified that the group actually included 15 skiers.

Captain Russell Greene said in an interview that the avalanche happened around 11:30 a.m. He said the incident was also reported separately through an emergency beacon device.

Blackbird Mountain Guides, a company that runs guided backcountry tours, confirmed that the group involved included both guides and clients.

They were allegedly heading back to the trailhead after a three-day trip when the avalanche hit.

The group of 15 had been staying at the Frog Lake Backcountry Huts since Sunday.

Blackbird Mountain Guides said they are working with local authorities and a Nevada County search and rescue team to help with the ongoing operation.

The sheriff’s office has also been communicating with the survivors through an emergency satellite messaging system, which allows rescuers to exchange text messages.

Captain Greene said that the avalanche occurred in a difficult and unstable area and that because of that, crews have to tread carefully to avoid setting off additional slides.

Truckee, a town of roughly 17,000 people, has been dealing with blizzard-like weather, which has hampered the search efforts.

Boreal Mountain Ski Resort reported about 30 inches of snow in the past 24 hours.

In areas close to where the slide happened, snow was coming down at a rate of three to four inches per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

With all the heavy snow, an avalanche warning was put in place for the area on Tuesday.

In a bulletin posted Tuesday, the Sierra Avalanche Center said the backcountry was facing a high avalanche risk; slides were expected through Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning.

Forecasters also said avalanches could reach up to D3 in size, which is big enough to bury a house or a car.

The post 9 Missing After Avalanche Near Lake Tahoe in California appeared first on Gazette Review.
