Kim Namjoon- aka “RM”, is best known as the leader of the South Korean boy group, BTS. Since 2010, he has contributed to a number of their projects including the albums, Wings, and Dark & Wild.
In addition to his work with BTS, the rapper has collaborated with several other artists including Primary, Warren G, Wale, Krizz Kaliko, and Gaeko, to name a few. In fact, he even released a solo mixtape, RM, in 2015. Well received, it was later hailed as one of the “Top 50 Hip-Hop Albums of 2015” by Spin Magazine.
How Kim Namjoon Became Famous
Kim Namjoon gained fame as the leader of the global sensation boy band, BTS. Born on September 12, 1994, in Ilsan, South Korea, his journey into the world of music began at a very young age when he developed an interest in writing and creating his own lyrics. As a teenager, he was part of an underground hip-hop scene where he honed his rapping skills under the name “Runch Randa.”
In 2010, his talent caught the attention of Big Hit Entertainment’s CEO Bang Si-hyuk. Kim Namjoon was then recruited to be part of a hip-hop project which was later transformed into what we know today as BTS. The formation of BTS marked a significant turning point in Kim Namjoon’s life – from being an underground rapper to becoming a global pop star.
Kim Namjoon became famous not only for his rapping skills but also for his role as a leader and a songwriter for BTS. Known for his intellectual prowess (he boasts an IQ of 148), Namjoon has contributed to writing and producing more than 90 percent of BTS’ songs. His lyrics touch on topics such as mental health, youth struggles, and self-love. This authentic and powerful messaging resonated with millions of young fans worldwide, skyrocketing both his and BTS’ popularity.
Their breakthrough came in 2013 with the release of their debut single album “2 Cool 4 Skool.” Since then, BTS has grown into a global phenomenon, breaking numerous records and making significant impacts in the music industry. And Kim Namjoon, as the band’s leader, has often been the group’s public face, delivering speeches at important events like the United Nations General Assembly.

Since his rise to fame as a member of BTS, he has appeared on television several times in Korea. For instance, he was featured in the documentary, 4things Show: Rap Monster and in the quiz show, Hot Brain.
At one point, he was even featured in the reality series, Close-Up Observation Diary on Idol, which followed his daily life for several days.
