Adam Lambert is one of those celebrities you remember from American Idol as being the guy that should have won. He was runner up on season eight, losing to Kris Allen. Kris hasn’t found the largest amount of fame, but is still actively producing music in 2016. Adam Lambert on the other hand has certainly found more success than Kris, having sold 2.5 million albums and 5 million singles worldwide since 2009. He even received a Grammy nomination for his single, “Whataya Want From Me”.
American Idol: How Adam Got His Start
While competing in American Idol, Lambert earned strong praise from Simon Cowell, even earning a rare standing ovation from the usually jaded judge. Even at the very end, as Kris Allen was announced as the winner, Allen conceded that Lambert deserved the win. But since when has winning American Idol ever determined a singer’s success? Case in point: Jennifer Hudson (7th place in 2004), Clay Aiken (2nd place in 2003), Chris Daughtry (4th place in 2006), Katharine McPhee (2nd place in 2006), Kellie Pickler (6th place in 2006), and David Archuleta (2nd in 2008). Lambert’s sexuality was also revealed during his time on American Idol, through pictures of him kissing another male. Lambert admitted he was gay in a Rolling Stone interview shortly after the pictures were released, and many speculated that Lambert lost the competition due to his sexuality.
However, Lambert did not seem to find his success diminished post being outed by the paparazzi. His cover story in Rolling Stone in which he publicly discussed himself and his sexual orientation was the best selling issue of the magazine in 2009. Lambert has since returned to American Idol several times: beginning in 2010 to mentor a contestant during the Elvis Presley week, and then again every year until this past season of 2016, the last season of American Idol. He actually became the first former contestant to serve as a guest judge, in January of 2015 for the New York City auditions. Lambert has also performed many times on American Idol, earning praise for each outstanding performance.
Adam’s Sudden Success Post-Idol
When Lambert was launched into his career as a pop singer from American Idol, people certainly noticed him not only for his flamboyant personality and performance ability, but for his outstanding and powerful voice. His high notes astonished everyone, and Lambert was noted for his glam rock style and classic rock voice that could also dynamically adopt pop and pop rock styles. He soon found success with his first studio album, For Your Entertainment. The album was released in November of 2009, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, and sold 198,000 copies in the United States in its first week. The two singles released from that album were “For Your Entertainment” and “Whataya Want From Me”, with the latter actually finding more success on the charts and earning an Emmy nomination. The album For Your Entertainment ended up certified gold in the summer of 2010.
Lambert then went on to produce another studio album, entitled Trespassing, after changing management from 18 Entertainment to Direct Management Group in August of 2011. The three singles from this album became “Better Than I Know Myself,” “Trespassing,” and “Never Close Our Eyes.” These three came from collaborations with Dr. Luke, better known now for the allegations of sexual harassment than his work as a producer,  Pharrell Williams, and Bruno Mars. Overall, the album found moderate success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and selling 77,000 copies in the first week. After the release of Trespassing, Lambert left his contract with RCA, citing “creative differences.” However, this departure allowed him to participate in other ventures including a single with Avicii, “Lay Me Down,” and a guest appearance on season five of Glee, delighting fans with his version of Lady Gaga’s “Marry the Night.” That song was not Lambert’s first experience with Lady Gaga’s music: the song “Fever” from his first album For Your Entertainment, was written by Lady Gaga herself. Lambert has been compared to Lady Gaga in terms of vocal talent and attention to appearance and theatricality whilst performing.
It also allowed him to pick up on his performing with the rock band Queen. Lambert had initially gotten the attention of the rock band Queen when he was first performing on American Idol, but really began collaborating with them in 2013. He performs as their lead vocalist while on tour. He has been on tour with Queen since 2014, performing in shows with them in the United States and Canada, Korea and Japan, Australia and New Zealand, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, and Switzerland.
In 2014, a compilation album entitled The Essential Adam Lambert was released that included recordings from Lambert’s time on American Idol and Glee, as well as his first two studio albums. However, that was just a reminder of the magic that was to come in Lambert’s third studio album: The Original High.
What’s Adam Doing Now in 2018? – Recent Updates
The lead single from that 2015 album, “Ghost Town” was touted as Lambert’s best single to date by the New York Times, and the song eventually was certified gold in January of 2016. While on tour to promote the new album, Lambert again ran into a bit of discrimination for his sexual orientation: in November of 2015, an online petition surfaced protesting Lambert’s appearance in Singapore later that year due to his homosexuality and support of LGBT rights. Lambert was allowed to perform, but warned that his performance needed to adhere to broadcasting and television laws. At the end of 2015, Lambert was ranked as the top earning former contestant of American Idol by Forbes Magazine and will co-star in Fox’s presentation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show as Eddie.
Most recently, Macy’s announced on May 3rd that Lambert would be the new face in their American Icon advertising campaign along with the organization “Got Your 6,” which supports America’s veterans. This is not a surprise, as Lambert has been a fashion icon since his start on American Idol. Clearly Adam Lambert is not slowing down anytime soon, and we hope to see much more from him!
I liked him from day one on idol, and I still like him!! You go Adam!!
