Born on November 11, 1989, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Adam Rippon is the oldest of six children. Though born with a severe hearing loss, doctors were able to remedy the condition with surgery prior to his first birthday. As it happened, he took up skating after following his mother to the rink one day when he was ten years old.

Coached by Yelena Sergeeva, he eventually made it to his first US Championships at the age of sixteen, where he won the silver medal at the Novice level. From there, he competed as a junior at the Triglav Trophy event where he placed first. Some of the other competitions that he had taken part in during that time include the ISU Junior Grand Prix and the 2007 US Championships.

By the 2008-09 season, he had moved up to compete on the senior level. Shortly afterward, he was signed to take part in 2008 Skate America, where he finished eighth overall. After another off-podium finish at the Cup of Russia, he switched coaches in 2009.

Since then, Rippon has taken part in numerous events including the US Championships, Japan Open, ISU Grand Prix, Four Continents Championships, and Skate Canada, to name a few.

Most recently for the 2017-18 season, he successfully medalled at the CS Finlandia Trophy, Skate America, and NHK Trophy, With that, he was named as one of three men to represent the United States the 2018 Winter Games to be held in Pyeongchang. Historically, this is incredibly noteworthy as it makes him the first openly gay athlete to have ever qualified for the Winter Olympics.
