An American figure skater, Johnny Weir had represented the U.S. at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games. Aside from being a two-time Olympian, he has also medalled at the Grand Prix Final, and World Championships. He later retired from competition in 2013.
Hailing from Pennsylvania, he began skating at the age of twelve. Prior to that, he had enjoyed horseback riding. To facilitate his training on the ice, he and his family eventually moved to Newark, Delaware. Several years later, he won his first gold medal at the World Junior Championships at the age of sixteen.
How Johnny Weir Became Famous
Ultimately, it was during the 2003-04 season that he started to gain more attention as a skater. After qualifying for the US Nationals, he successfully won a gold medal at the 2004 US Championships, after beating Matthew Savoie, and Michael Weiss.
Over the next few years, he continued to compete in numerous events including the 2004 NHK Trophy, 2005 US Championships, 2006 Skate Canada, and Cup of Russia.
Then, in 2006, he represented the U.S. for the first time at the Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. Despite having skated a personal best during the short program, however, he narrowly missed the podium with a fifth-place finish.
Johnny Weir’s Later Skating Career
Two years later, he medalled for the first time at the World Championships after finishing third on the podium. From there, he also medalled at the Grand Prix Final in Goyang.
After sustaining a few injuries, he chose to retire from competitive skating in October 2013. Since then, he has worked as a skating analyst for NBC.
In the years since he has remained active as a skating through ice shows such as Champion on Ice and Artistry on Ice. In 2015, he also took part in the Russian ice show, Snow King.
