Nicole Richie, a childhood friend of Paris Hilton and the adopted daughter of Lionel Richie, is an actress, socialite, fashion designer, and author. She is perhaps most famous for the early 2000’s reality show The Simple Life, where she and Paris Hilton lived on a family farm in Altus, Arkansas. Nicole Richie was born on September 21st, 1981 in Berkeley, California to Karen Moss and Peter Escovedo. Her parents were unable to provide proper financial care to their daughter, so they sent her the three-year-old Nicole to live with their friend, the musician Lionel Richie. She was legally adopted by Lionel and his ex-wife Brenda when Nicole was 9 years old. Having a famous adoptive dad has its perks, and one of them was meeting the rich and famous. Nicole’s childhood bestie was the heiress to the Hilton hotel fortune, Paris Hilton. That relationship led to Richie’s breakout reality series, The Simple Life.
Nicole Richie’s Modeling Career
The Simple Life series spanned for five seasons, even surviving the fallout of the end of Richie’s and Hilton’s friendship. The two starlets stopped speaking in 2005 and apparently reconciled a year later. Since the early 2000’s, Nicole has been an extra in various television series such as Six Feet Under, 8 Simple Rules, and Eve. She made her feature film debut in the Josh Stolberg comedy Kids in America, which received an awful 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nicole also starred in two other shows – the Fashion Star which aired in 2012, and the 2017 sitcom, Great News.
Besides acting, Nicole Richie has also attempted a music career. She went on The View in 2005, where she played the piano live. She also performed in the 25th Anniversary track of “We Are The World 25 for Haiti.” Nicole also tried her hand at writing fiction and released two novels – The Truth About Diamonds and Priceless. Her most profitable side gig by far has been her fashion lines.
Since 2008, Nicole has released a jewelry line named after her daughter called House of Harlow 1960. This line won her the Entrepreneur of the Year Award with Glamour in 2010. It features bold statement pieces that range from affordable to pricey, and the jewelry is still available on her website. The jewelry line expanded into a collection of maternity clothing, handbags, and fragrances.

Nicole Richie dated DJ AM from 2003 to 2005, and the pair were engaged for less than a year before they broke it off. The DJ died 4 years later from a drug overdose. In 2006, Nicole started seeing Joel Madden of the pop punk band Good Charlotte. Before the two were married in 2010, they had two children – Sparrow James Midnight Maddon and Harlow Winter Kate Maddon. The family has been living in Australia since 2012 when Joel was on that country’s version of The Voice.
