How Did TI Make His Money and Wealth?

ti 2 Born on September 25, 1980, in Atlanta, Georgia, TI (Real Name: Clifford Joseph Harris Jr.) started to rap when he was just eight years old. As a teen however, he had multiple brush-ins with the law, having unlawfully dealt drugs. By the time he was fourteen, he had been arrested by officials numerous times. It wasn’t until he became acquainted with Atlanta rapper named Big Kuntry King, that he redirected his attention toward hip hop music. Eventually recording a few mix tapes together, they later started to sell them out of the trunk of a car.

As it happened, one of their tapes landed in the hands of Kawan Prather, a record executive. From there, the aspiring rapper soon forged a recording deal with Arista Records. In the fall of 2001, TI dropped his debut studio album entitled, I’m Serious. Despite being a commercial disappointment, it still managed to reach within the top 100 on the US Billboard Top 200. It later went on to sell over 268,000 copies in the United States.

Determined to do better, TI later released his second full length album, Trap Muzik after a label change to Atlantic Records. Around that time, he also formed his own label imprint, Grand Hustle Records with his long-time business partner, Jason Geter. Met with favorable reviews from critics, it proved to be significantly more successful than his initial endeavor. A financial hit, it sold over 109,000 copies within the first week, after debuting at number four on the US Billboard Top 200. As well, it also peaked at number two on the Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums Chart. Inundated with glowing reviews, it has since sold over 1,700,000 copies in the US alone.

A year after his big break, he came out with Urban Legend on November 30, 2004. Responsible for TI’s first top ten hit, it debuted at the seventh spot on the Billboard Top 200. Selling over 193,000 copies within the initial week, it later became a chart topper on both the Top Rap Albums and the Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums Charts. His first album to chart overseas, it also peaked at number thirty nine in Japan. Popular among fans, it sold over 1,000,000 copies domestically in a matter of months.

His first international hit, it also charted in Canada, Ireland, France, Japan, and Switzerland. Nominated for three Grammy Awards, King was also considered to be one of the best albums of its year by multiple publications. TI’s first album to go Double Platinum, it quickly went on to sell over 2,000,000 copies. As with all multi-platinum albums, it would have earned the rapper a hefty amount.

In 2007, TI earned another sizable sum from his fifth studio album, T.I. vs T.I.P. His second release to top all three US Charts (e.g. Billboard Top 200, Top Rap Albums, Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums), it effortlessly sold more than 468,000 copies in the first week. Nominated for yet another Grammy Award, it later went Platinum the following month for selling over 1,000,000 copies.

By the end of its second week, it had sold a staggering 745,000 copies. Certified two times Platinum by the RIAA, over 2,000,000 shipments have been made across the country.
