Born on July 1, 1996, in Moscow, Russia, Adelina Sotnikova started to skate at the age of four. After being coached by Anna Patrikeeva for the first few years, she became a member at CSKA, a major sports club, where began to train with Elena Buianova. Like most young skaters, it didn’t take long for her to master most of the basic skills. Before she knew it, she was working on challenging spins and jumps on the ice.
By the time she was twelve years old, she had debuted at the senior level in her native Russia. During the 2008-09 season, she participated in the Russian Nationals, where she successfully won the gold medal. Not long afterward, she also finished first at the Russian Junior Championships.
Though she later experienced some setbacks due to a growth spurt, she eventually returned to the podium during the 2010-11 season, with a win at the Junior Grand Prix. From there, she also qualified for and won the Junior title at the Grand Prix Final event.
Over the next two years, Sotnikova continued to bag medals are several events including the Russian Championships, Golden Spin of Zagreb, World Junior Championships, ISU World Team Trophy, and European Championships, to name a few. In 2013, she made her debut at the World Championships where she ranked ninth overall after her free program.
As it happened, the skater eventually placed first at the Russian Championships which took place in 2014. From there, she landed a spot on the Olympic team, where she had the opportunity to represent Russia at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. Though she finished second in the SP behind Kim Yuna, she subsequently made a comeback in the FS, which earned her the gold medal.
