One of the most popular figure skaters of all time, Michelle Kwan had won two Olympic golds during the peak of her career. In addition to that, she had also won the US National Championships nine times, and the World Championships five times.
Born and raised in California, she initially followed her older siblings to the ice rink at the age of five. With that said, it wasn’t until she was eight years old that she started to take skating more seriously. As one thing led to another, she eventually won her first world title at the age of sixteen.
How Michelle Kwan Became Famous
Ultimately, it was in the mid to late 90’s that she first started to gain attention on the international level. As previously mentioned, she had won her first gold medal at the 1996 World Championships at the age of sixteen. From there, she eventually repeated her success at the same competition in 1998.
With that, she had earned herself a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano. After placing first in the short program, and second in the free program, she finished second overall for a silver medal.
Four years later, she represented the United States for a second time a the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where she finished third on the podium for a bronze medal.
After a few more years of competition, Kwan retired in 2006.
Michelle Kwan’s Recent Activities
Since her retirement, she has kept busy with various activities- for instance, she was made one of the board of directors for the Special Olympics in 2011. In 2015, it was also announced that she would be supporting Hilary Clinton’s campaign.
A recipient of many awards, she was most recently inducted into the California Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
