Hailing from Russia, Yulia Lipnitskaya was only fifteen years old when she won a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Highly talented on the ice, she had also won the European Championships earlier that year. After battling against anorexia for several years, she retired from the sport in 2017.
Brought up in Yekaterinburg, she began skating at the age of four, under the guidance of coach Elena Levkovets. Wanting to facilitate her training, she and her mother later moved to Moscow at the age of eleven.
How Yulia Lipnitskaya Became Famous
As a junior, Lipnitskaya first started to garner attention during the 2011-12 season, with gold medals at both the Junior Grand Prix Final and World Junior Championships.
Finally, in 2014, she rose to fame after representing Russia at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. With her gold medal win in the team event, she became the youngest Russian athlete to win an Olympic gold, at the age of fifteen. In the individual event, she narrowly missed the podium having finished in fifth place. Not long after she won, she was featured on the cover of Elle Girl Russia, a popular fashion and beauty magazine.
Later that same year, she competed in the 2014 World Championships in Saitama, where she finished in second place.
Yulia Lipnitskaya’s Retirement from Competition
Despite her talent and immense potential, Lipnitskaya surprised everyone by announcing her retirement from competition in 2017. According to reports, this decision had stemmed from the fact that she had been suffering from anorexia for many years prior.
Though she will no longer be participating in competitions, she will remain involved with the sport through ice shows and exhibitions. The last that we’d heard, she had also expressed interest in coaching.
