A two-time Olympian, Therese Johaug has medalled at numerous events throughout her competitive skiing career. In 2010, she gained attention after winning a gold medal in the 4 x 5 km relay event at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Despite her potential, however, she was recently suspended from competition after testing positive for a banned steroid.
Though she was initially suspended for a period of 13 months (which would have allowed her to compete in the 2018 Winter Games), the suspension was later prolonged by the CAS, which led her to miss the recent Olympics.
How Therese Johaug Became Famous
At the age of twenty-two, she represented Norway for the first time at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. A participant in three of the cross-country skiing events (e.g. 30 km mass start, 15 km skiathlon, 4 x 5 km relay), she ultimately went on to win a gold medal in the relay.
Over the next few years, she continually finished on the podium at the World Championships. To be more specific, she had won four gold medals between 2011 and 2013, in the 4 x 5 km relay, 30 km freestyle, and 10 km freestyle.
By the time the 2014 Winter Olympics came, she was considered by many to be a top contender.
That year, she ended up winning two medals- one silver, one gold, in the 30 km freestyle and 10 km classical disciplines. During the 15 km skiathlon, she had narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish.
Therese Johaug’s Doping Incident
In the fall of 2016, it was made public that she had tested positive for a banned steroid called cloestebol. After being suspended for two months by Anti-Doping Norway, she was given a 13-month suspension by the Olympic Committee. Though she initially intended to compete in the 2018 Olympics, her suspension was later prolonged which led her to miss her third Winter Olympic Games.
