Firefly 2 Dry Herbal Vaporizer Review

The FireFly 2 is a portable convection vaporizer made for dry herbs, although some products do work nicely in it, including concentrates and oils. The FireFly 2 is a new, updated version of the original FireFly, released some years ago – although, this new and updated version is lighter, smaller and works much better. One of the most important things to notice is that the FireFly is famous for its power and amazing airflow, thanks in part to the magnetic surfaces that click together to form one complete chamber. For a portable vaporizer, the FireFly 2 is equipped to be a very sleek and low-profile, yet powerful tool.

The FireFly 2

The FireFly 2 provides on-demand heating, which means that you can command the vaporizer to begin heating with only the press of a button. The FireFly 2 does have a small oven, which should get the user anywhere from 5 to 15 draws depending on how big their breath intake is. The FireFly 2 also comes equipped with an application that allows the user to control the vaporizer through a control panel on their phone. As mentioned earlier, the FireFly 2 is capable of handling both herbs and oils – for oils, simply place a pad in the oven that will cause the oil to evenly heat up and release the vapor, rather than combusting it. These pads tend to go bad after 5 or 6 uses of oil or concentrates, and need to be thrown away because cleaning them is a little too much of a process due to the grooves indented on the pads.

Build/Hardware

While the original FireFly vaporizer had a chamber with ridges, with a hollowed-out path for the vapor to travel through, the new FireFly 2 does away with the chamber in favor of micro laser-drilled holes. These holes allow for the vapor to pass through, instead of following a complicated path. The FireFly 2 is also a little more than half as small as the original unit, coming in at a weight of 140 grams instead of the original’s more hefty 288 grams. Of course, the entire unit is also about 30% smaller than the original.

The body of the FireFly 2 is made from high quality materials and engineered very well, which is surprising considering that it is manufactured in China – there have been very few reports of defective units. The body is made with a new magnesium alloy, which is a tougher, yet lighter material than the original magnesium body that coated the original FireFly. All of the parts are odorless, heat-resistant, and food safe. It is very durable and high quality, although the exterior finish does leave a lot to be desired because my personal unit has been the victim of many unintentional scratches and scrapes over the year. However, the FireFly 2 retains some of the customization that the original FireFly was famous for, which includes being able to swap out the faceplate (and even the back of the vaporizer, if you purchase the appropriate plating).

The FireFly 2 is powered by a proprietary battery that pops in the back of the unit. The battery can be charged by placing the unit in the cradle. The FireFly 2 includes two of these batteries. In fact, your entire FireFly 2 purchase will include the vaporizer unit, two batteries, a charging dock, a USB 3.0 cable (for charging the unit directly, such as in the car), a cleaning kit (some pipe cleaners, moist towelettes of rubbing alcohol, a brush and three screens), and 3 concentrate pads. Additional concentrate pads can be purchased from the FireFly website in a pack of 3 for $8.95. In addition, you can also purchase additional mouthpieces for $9.95 for a 2 pack, replacement battery doors for $19.95, and different colored top lid doors for $39.95 each.
Software/App

The FireFly 2 also includes support for the free FireFly app, which is available on both iOS and Android devices. The FireFly app connects through low-powered bluetooth to your specific FireFly, which allows you to choose from six preset temperatures and choose the custom touch sensor activation – instead of communicating to the user through an LED or a series of flashing buttons, the FireFly 2 relies on the app as the main control panel to communicate information with the user. The only other vaporizer I know that does this include both the Crafty and Mighty vaporizers.

Overall

The FireFly 2 is available in black, blue, gold, red, and silver, which include an extra 2 colors over the FireFly’s original 4. The FireFly 2 is a must-have upgrade for anyone still using the original FireFly, as it is easily the best portable herbal vaporizer available. For a price of $329.95, the investment is worth it – you will be able to discretely enjoy the FireFly 2 anywhere you can lie low for a few minutes, and the experience is absolutely outstanding. The FireFly 2 is an absolute upgrade over the original, and a must-have for anyone looking to get into vaporizing their herbal products.
