About Turo

Touted as the “Airbnb of cars”, Turo was founded in 2009 by Shelby Clark, Nabeel Al-Kady, and Tara Reeves. The startup was first known as RelayRides and was inspired by the online marketplace concept similar to eBay and Airbnb.

RelayRides was launched in Boston in 2010 and established its headquarters in San Francisco later that year. In 2012, the startup covered all states in the US until in 2013 when it was suspended in New York due to a number of violations. The suspension is still active up to this day.

The startup was rebranded in 2015 as Turo and has received millions in funding from several capital firms during the previous years. In 2016, Turo expanded to other countries and is now available in Canada, the UK, Germany, and is slowly creeping its way into Asia.
